Studio Baboo® ~ Classes

We have a continually changing schedule of classes offering everything from basic bead stringing to off loom stitches to wire work. We also host several special workshop events throughout the year - Jeannette Cook, Maggie Meister, Fabulous Flowers and more! If you have any questions about the skill level required for any of the classes, please call us.

If the class you wish to take is full, please ask to be put on the waiting list. Or, if you are interested in taking a class that does not fit your schedule, please let us know so we can determine if there is sufficient interest to schedule the class again.

Class Registration Information

Register for workshops in person at the store or by telephone with a credit card. To Register by Phone Call: 434-244–2905. Registration will be accepted on a first come basis. Payment in full is required at the time of registration. Advance registration is strongly recommended - your space in the workshop is not secure until we receive payment. Materials and tools are not included in the class fee unless noted. Class fees are not refundable unless Studio Baboo cancels the class.

A supply list will be mailed to you upon receipt of your registration. Please read it carefully as you may be required to do some advance preparation before coming to class. ALL REQUIRED MATERIALS AND TOOLS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE STORE AND OUR STAFF WILL GLADLY HELP YOU WITH YOUR SELECTIONS. Please purchase your materials ahead of time or arrive early to shop for your materials as no class time is allotted for purchasing materials. The store is open to students one-half hour before early morning classes begin. Samples of the class projects are on display in the store and we encourage you to stop by and see them.

Classes will begin promptly – please be courteous and arrive on time. Unless otherwise specified, classes are suitable for adults and children over the age of 14. No babies, children or unregistered guests are permitted in the workshop.

If the class you wish to take is full, please ask to be put on the waiting list. Or, if you are interested in taking a class that does not fit your schedule, please let us know so we can determine if there is sufficient interest to schedule the class again.

A NOTE ABOUT CELL PHONES: Please turn off your cell phone while in the classroom. It is disruptive and discourteous to the instructor and students when your phone rings during class. If it is imperative that you stay in touch with family or office while in class, please put your phone on silent mode and let your voice mail take a message. If you must return a call, LEAVE THE CLASSROOM and step outside to return the call. If you miss important instructions while you are absent from the classroom, the instructor cannot be expected to "catch you up" when you return to class.

	CRYSTAL COCTAIL RING SATURDAY FEBRUARY 6th Instructor:Kerrie Pierce Level: Intermediate Time: 11:00-3:00 Fee: $30 Who needs the high-priced jewelry store when you can stitch a ring like this? Learn to bezel a Swarovski crystal with peyote stitch and how to size the ring band for your finger. The instructor will discuss different options for embellishing the bezel. Students should know how to do basic peyote.
	CHANDELIER EARRINGS WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 10th Instructor:Terri Gable Level: Intermediate Time: 11:00-2:00 Fee: $30 Drop everything - pearls, crystals or gemstones! Learn to make an elegant chandelier style earring in class and go home with ideas for many more styles! Students will make one earring in class but may have to complete the half of the pair home. Many of these designs can also be used as a necklace pendant! Students must be adept at making earrings using headpins.
	BEAD STRINGING BASICS SATURDAY FEBRUARY 13th Instructor: Studio Baboo Staff Level: Beginner Time: 11:00-1:00 Fee: $25 (Materials Included) Learn the basics of creating beautiful jewelry using the most popular stringing technique. We will discuss how to choose the correct type of stringing material as well as the use of different findings. Students will complete a necklace in class.
	SPARKLY WHEEL SATURDAY FEBRUARY 13th Instructor:Terri Gable Level: All Time: 2:00-4:00 Fee: $25 This intricate-looking little circle of crystals and seed beads is easy to make! Suspend one from a sweet ribbon necklace or hang one or more from a delicate chain. Nikia Angel designed these addicting little sparkly wheels - they are so much fun, you won't be able to make just one! Students should be comfortable using needle and thread or have basic sewing skills.
	CAPTURED JEWELS WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 17th Instructor:Louise Smith Level: All Time: 11:00-3:00 Fee: $30 Capture tiny little jewels in a net of seed beads. This bangle-style bracelet will earn you many compliments each time you wear it. Despite its complex look, it's quite simple to make. Level: All. Students should be comfortable using a needle and thread or have basic sewing skills.
	BEAD AND WIRE KNITTED CUFF SATURDAY FEBRUARY 20th Instructor:Kerrie Pierce Level: Beginner Time: 11:00-3:00 Fee: $30 Learn to capture crystals, beads and pearls in a lacy wire knit bracelet. This is a simple technique that yields stunning results. Students may not finish in class but will leave prepared to finish at home. Level: Beginner. Prerequisite: Students must know how to do a basic knit stitch with yarn.
	GRECIAN SWIRL BRACELET Sunday Feb. 21st Instructor:Barbara Tilley Level: Intermediate Time: 2:00-4:00 Fee: $35 (included copper wire) Fit for the goddess in you, this regal confection of coils has a hint of antiquity! Deceptive in its complicated appearance, this bracelet is easier than it looks. You will learn to manage and wrap multiple strands of wire and create coils. Don't be surprised if friends put you on a pedestal and beg you to make them one too! Students must have previous wire working experience which allows them to confidently manipulate wire without kinking, make consistently sized simple wire loops and wrapped wire loops.

	PINEAPPLE NECKLACE SATURDAY FEBRUARY 27th Instructor:Barbara Tilley Level: Intermediate Time: 11:00-3:00 Fee: $35 (Fee includes copper wire) A feast for the eyes, this necklace looks good enough to eat! Learn to create delicate looping swirls, creatively link beads together and showcase some of your favorite beads in the fabulous pineapple pendant. Students will also be able to make matching earrings. You will not complete your necklace in class. Level: Intermediate: Students must have previous wire working experience which allows them to confidently manipulate wire without kinking, make consistently sized simple wire loops and wrapped wire loops.
	MEDICI ROSETTE BRACELET SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27th Instructor:Louise Smith Level: All Time: 12:00-4:00 Fee: $30 Connect small jeweled medallions to create an elegant bangle-style bracelet fit for a renaissance queen! Despite its complex look, it's quite simple to make. Students should have experience with one or more off loom beading tachinques.

	WIRE SWIRLS AND CURLS WEDNESDAY MARCH 3rd Instructor: Terri Gable Level: Experienced Beginner Time: 10:00-2:00 Fee: $40(Includes Sterling Silver wire.) Learn to create free-form wire wave and spiral components and wrapped loop bead links. Have fun combining the components with beads, pearls and charms into a fanciful bracelet.Required Skills: Students must be adept at manipulating wire into consistently sized, round loops without assistance (as for making earrings)
	FRENCH BEADED BUGS SATURDAY MARCH 6th Instructor: Kerrie Pierce Level: Beginner to Advanced Time: 10:00-4:00 Fee: $50 Learn to make Butterflies, Dragonflies and Bumblebees. These little insects make great additions to your beaded flowers or may be turned into fashion accessories for your clothes, shoes or handbags. No experience necessary. As a bonus, this class will include an additional lesson manual and will teach the techniques needed to learn the "Basic Method" which is used to make most French beaded flowers.
	FRENCH BEADED HYDRANGEA SATURDAY MARCH 6th Instructor: Kerrie Pierce Level: INTERMEDIATE Time: 10:00-4:00 Fee: $50 Don't be intimidated by all those little flowers! In no time at all you'll have a beautiful Mop-head Hydrangea to show off your talents. Techniques you should know: Round Basic, the Pointed Basic, Continuous Loops, and Lacing. Techniques you will learn: Double, Triple, and Quadruple Loops; and Scalloped edges.
	TWINKLE BEADS WEDNESDAY MARCH 10th Instructor: Louise Smith Level: All Time: 10:00-2:00 Fee: $30 These sparkly, intricate-looking little beaded beads are full of color and texture.Students will learn to make three variations - a round bead, spacer bead and a bead cap. These easy to make little gems can be can be created in endless color combinations to add pizzazz to your designs.Students should be conforable using needle and thread or have basic sewing skills.

	WRAPPED LOOP CHARM BRACELET SATURDAY MARCH 13th Instructor: Studio Baboo Staff Level: Beginner Time: 1:00-4:00 Fee: $25 (Materials Included) Take the mystery out of making wrapped wire loops while making a delightful charm bracelet. Students will learn how to handle wire-working pliers properly, discuss the use of various types of wire and the infinite number of ways you can use this simple technique. Level: Beginner. Prerequisite: Patience and a good attitude!
	WIRE SWIRL PENDANT SATURDAY MARCH 20th Instructor: Barbara Tilley Level: Beginner Time: 10:00-12:00 Fee: $30(Fee includes copper wire.) Learn to capture a cameo or cabochon in an elegant swirl of wire. Once you learn these simple wire wrapping techniques you'll be able to turn almost anything into a stylish pendant – even a rock! Level: Experienced Beginner: Students must be adept at manipulating wire into consistently sized, round loops without assistance (as for making earrings).
	WIRE WRAPPED PENDANT-COBRA BAIL SATURDAY MARCH 20th Instructor: Barbara Tilley Level: Intermediate Time: 1:00-4:00 Fee: $30 (Fee includes copper wire.) Advance your wire working skills while making a tailored pendant. This traditional bail-making technique is perfect to show off a special cabochon. Level: Intermediate: Students must have previous wire working experience which allows then to confidently manipulate wire without kinking, make consistently sized simple wire loops and wrapped wire loops.
	SPIRALING DUET WEDNESDAY MARCH 24th Instructor: Louise Smith Level: All Time: 10:00-2:00 Fee: $30 Learn to combine herringbone and right-angle weave in this elegant spiral bracelet. Lean to create fabulous texture with the herringbone section and capture special little beads in the right-angle weave section. Choose a subtle color combination for everyday wear or bold contrasting colors for a lot of fun! Students should be comfortable using needle and thread or have basic sewing skills.
	EARRRING BASICS THURSDAY MARCH 25th Instructor: Studio Baboo Staff Level: Beginner Time: 5:30-7:00 Fee: $25 (Materials Included) Expand your jewelry wardrobe with earrings. Students will learn how to make consistently sized wire loops and combine bead components. Students will make three pair of earrings in class. Level: Beginner to Intermediate
	FRENCH BEADED CROWN IMPERIAL SATURDAY MARCH 27th Instructor: Donna Dickt Level: Intermediate Time: 10:00-4:00 Fee: $50 It's easy to see why the majestic Crown Imperial is one of the most popular of the fritillarias. Its ring of bright red, orange, or yellow bell-shaped flowers sit atop a leafless stem, wearing a "crown" of upright leaves. The effect is stately and imposing. But don't let the appearance of these flowers fool you -- they are very easy to make. Techniques you should know: Round Basic, Pointed Basic, Beading a Stem. Techniques you will learn: Single Split Basic.
	FRENCH BEADED PARROT TULIP SUNDAY MARCH 28th Instructor: Donna Dickt Level: Intermediate Time: 10:00-4:00 Fee: $50 The Parrot Tulip will combine many advanced techniques and stretch your artistic talents. For the ultimate challenge try shading in yellow and red to make the classic “Flaming Parrot.” Prerequisite: Students should be proficient at round basic, pointed basic, scalloped edges, reverse wrap and lacing .
	WAVY WIRE NECKLACE WEDNESDAY MARCH 31st Instructor: Terri Gable Level: All Time: 10:00-2:00 Fee: $40(Includes Sterling Silver wire) Learn to manipulate wire into free-from wave components,hammer and texture the wire, make bead links and assemble all into a necklace that will earn you compliments every time you wear it! Level: All. No previous wire working experience required.

	BEAD LOOM WEAVING SATURDAY, APRIL 3rd Instructor: Terri Gable Level: Beginner Time: 10:00-4:00 Fee: $40 Learn to warp a loom, weave, decrease and finish ends. While creating a small brooch or pendant students will learn to read a charted pattern, create negative space and incorporate small accent beads into the loom woven fabric. Note: A sturdy wooden bead weaving loom is required. Indian-style metal or plastic looms are not suitable for this class.
	KUMIHIMO BEADED BRAID SATURDAY, APRIL 10th Instructor: Kerrie Pierce Level: All Time: 10:00-4:00 Fee: $40 Kumihimo is a Japanese word meaning “the gathering of threads”. Learn to “gather threads” and complete a 20” necklace by braiding 8 strands of seed beads using a Japanese Maru Dai braiding stand. NOTE: Pre-class preperation is required.
	RIGHT ANGLE WALTZ WEDNESDAY, APRIL 14th Instructor: Louise Smith Level: Intermediate Time: 10:00-2:00 Fee: $30 Create a fabulous cascadeing ribbon of right angle weave in this graceful bracelet. The 3mm crystals will waltz delicately around your wrist in this elegant creation. Students must know how to do right angle weave.
	CHAIN MAILLE NECKLACE-HELMS CHAIN SATURDAY, APRIL 17th Instructor: Meghan Bryant Level: All Time: 10:00-2:00 Fee: $35 (Includes kit) The helms chain is an excellent introduction to chain maille as well as an interesting new pattern for intermediate students. This parallel weave is straightforward and attractive. The instructor will also discuss how to make jump rings.
	FRUIT OF THE VINE BRACELET WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21st Instructor: Jackie Monticup Level: All Time: 10:00-2:00 Fee: $30 Clusters of luscious sun kissed grapes and sparkly leaves hanging from the vine wrap sensuously around your wrist. Fringing and multiple strands are among the techniques you will learn. Prerequisite: Students should have basic sewing skills or be comfortable using a needle and thread.
	HUMMINGBIRD SATURDAY, APRIL 24th Instructor: Jackie Monticup Level: Experienced Beginner to Intermediate Time: 10:00-4:00 Fee: $65 (includes materials) Talk about eye-catching! Learn to make a gorgeous 3-dimensional ruby throated hummingbird, flying from a beaded flowers necklace. Looks incredibly complicated, but you can do this- it's easy! Jackie's methods, tips and techniques will guide you through the steps to create this masterpiece. Best of all, you'll get a complete kit with all the beads you need, plus illustrated instructions. Bring your patience and a sense of humor! (Project will not be completed in class). Prerequisite: Students must be able to do one or more off loom stitches with size 11º seed beads without assistance.
	GARDEN GARLAND NECKLACE WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28th Instructor: Louise Smith Level: Beginner Time: 10:00-2:00 Fee: $30 Picture a garland of leaves, vines and flowers twining gently around your neck! In this class students will make a simple small bead necklace and embellish it with flower beads as well as vines and leaves constructed from seed beads. Although the techniques are simple and within the scope of beginning beaders, they may also be interesting to intermediate beaders who have not yet explored the sculptural possibilities of seed bead work. Prerequisite: Students should be able to construct a simple necklace using thread or have basic sewing skills.

	ELIZABETHAN RUFFLED BRACELET SATURDAY, MAY 1st Instructor: Paulette Baron Level: Intermediate Time: 10:00-4:00 Fee: $75.00 Weave this stunning bracelet using interlocking sculptural peyote spirals. As you create this piece “fit for a queen” you will discover the versatility that peyote stitch provides in creating fascinating jewelry designs. Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced Prerequisite: Students must be able to do Peyote Stitch WITHOUT HELP.
	PINWHEEL GARDEN NECKLACE SUNDAY, MAY 2nd Instructor: Paulette Baron Level: Intermediate Time: 10:00-4:00 Fee: $75.00 Using a variation of flat peyote, learn to add dimension to your work while creating a necklace featuring flowers, spirals, and beaded "curls". Students will work with many sizes of seed beads within the same piece.
	BEGINNING BRICK STICH WEDNESDAY, MAY 5th Instructor: Kerrie Pierce Level: Beginner Time: 10:00-2:00 Fee: $30.00 Master the basics of brick stitch while creating an elegant pendant and earrings set. We will practice with larger beads in the morning and then use delicas in the afternoon to create the bails for the pendant and earrings.

	SLIDING KNOT BRACELET SATURDAY, MAY 15th Instructor: Meghan Bryant Level: All Time: 10:00-12:00 Fee: $25.00 Have fun with a focal bead while learning an easy, classic macramé knot. You'll love how easy it is to put on your own bracelet with a Chinese sliding knot closure!
	BITS & PIECES NECKLACE SATURDAY, MAY 15th Instructor: Meghan Bryant Level: All Time: 1:00-3:00 Fee: $25.00 This new style of finger crochet allows you to add beads of various sizes to your necklace. Finally, use up all those bits and pieces you can’t bear to part with and clean off that bead table! This casual style necklace will add a chic touch to any outfit.

	KILIM BEADS SATURDAY, JUNE 12th Special Guest Instructor: Maggie Meister Level: Intermediate to advanced Time: 10:00-4:00 Fee: $75 These are beads made with a peyote frame with brick stitch inserts - inspired by Turkish Kilims. The beads can be used as a pendant, earrings, etc. A working knowledge of Peyote Stitch and Brick Stitch is essential.
	TEKLA'S CUFF SUNDAY, JUNE 13th Special Guest Instructor: Maggie Meister Level: Intermediate to advanced Time: 10:00-4:00 Fee: $75 This cuff was inspired by the jewelry worn by royalty in the Byzantine Era and named for the Empress Tekla. Jewelry from this era is adorned with precious and semi-precious jewels and is large and elaborate. These pieces were made not only to show the importance of the royal person but also to draw attention away from the human body. Students will cover a metal armature with herringbone and peyote stitch and embellish it with fresh water pearls or semi precious stones. Participants will learn to combine these stitches, how to cover a form, bezel beads and stones. PREREQUISITE: Students must know Peyote and Herringbone Stitches. Some pre class preparation is required
	HAND KNOTTING BY APPOINTMENT ONLY Instructor: Terri Gable Level: All. Students should be comfortable using a needle and thread. Time: 1 ½ hours Fee: $65 (Includes book and materials kit) In a hands-on session you will learn the art of delicate knotting between beads as seen in fine jewelry. Learn from how to work with the correct tools and materials. You will work closely with the instructor to learn the correct techniques to achieve tight, well-placed knots. This is a techniques class - you will not finish your project in class.
	BEADS AND LUNCH EVERY TUESDAY Level: No skill level. Time: 11:00-2:00 Fee: NONE! Our classroom space is available every Tuesday for an “open studio” session. Bring a project, your own lunch or snacks and enjoy the company of other beaders. This is not a class but an opportunity to relax and have fun while you work on your bead projects away from the distractions of home and family. No need to sign up – no fee – come and go as your schedule permits Can't seem to focus on your projects at home? You are welcome to work at our “Make It – Take It” table. Weekdays and Thursday evenings are the best times to stop in if you need help and inspiration from our staff. But if Saturday is the only day that suits your schedule, well, that's fine, too.
