  Studio Baboo® ~ Classes

We have a continually changing schedule of classes offering everything from basic bead stringing to off loom stitches to wire work. We also host several special workshop events throughout the year - Jeannette Cook, Maggie Meister, Fabulous Flowers and more! If you have any questions about the skill level required for any of the classes, please call us.

If the class you wish to take is full, please ask to be put on the waiting list. Or, if you are interested in taking a class that does not fit your schedule, please let us know so we can determine if there is sufficient interest to schedule the class again.
  Class Registration Information

Register for workshops in person at the store or by telephone with a credit card. To Register by Phone Call: 434-244–2905. Registration will be accepted on a first come basis. Payment in full is required at the time of registration. Advance registration is strongly recommended - your space in the workshop is not secure until we receive payment. Materials and tools are not included in the class fee unless noted. Class fees are not refundable unless Studio Baboo cancels the class.

A supply list will be mailed to you upon receipt of your registration. Please read it carefully as you may be required to do some advance preparation before coming to class. ALL REQUIRED MATERIALS AND TOOLS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE STORE AND OUR STAFF WILL GLADLY HELP YOU WITH YOUR SELECTIONS. Please purchase your materials ahead of time or arrive early to shop for your materials as no class time is allotted for purchasing materials. The store is open to students one-half hour before early morning classes begin. Samples of the class projects are on display in the store and we encourage you to stop by and see them.

Classes will begin promptly – please be courteous and arrive on time. Unless otherwise specified, classes are suitable for adults and children over the age of 14. No babies, children or unregistered guests are permitted in the workshop.

A NOTE ABOUT CELL PHONES: Please turn off your cell phone while in the classroom. It is disruptive and discourteous to the instructor and students when your phone rings during class. If it is imperative that you stay in touch with family or office while in class, please put your phone on silent mode and let your voice mail take a message. If you must return a call, LEAVE THE CLASSROOM and step outside to return the call. If you miss important instructions while you are absent from the classroom, the instructor cannot be expected to "catch you up" when you return to class.

Fit for the goddess in you, this regal confection of coils has a hint of antiquity! Deceptive in its complicated appearance, this bracelet is easier than it looks. Students must have previous wire working experience which allows them to confidently manipulate wire without kinking, make consistently sized simple wire loops and wrapped wire loops.

It's easy to see why the majestic Crown Imperial is one of the most popular of the fritillarias. Its ring of bright red, orange, or yellow bell-shaped flowers sit atop a leafless stem, wearing a "crown" of upright leaves. The effect is stately and imposing. But don't let the appearance of these flowers fool you -- they are very easy to make. Techniques you should know: Round Basic, Pointed Basic, Beading a Stem. Learn to warp a loom, weave, decrease and finish ends. While creating a small brooch or pendant students will learn to read a charted pattern, create negative space and incorporate small accent beads into the loom woven fabric. Jackie's methods, tips and  techniques will guide you through the steps to create this masterpiece. Best of all, you'll get a complete kit with all the beads you need, plus illustrated instructions. Bring your patience and a sense of humor! (Project will not be completed in class). Prerequisite:  Students must be able to do one or more off loom stitches with size 11º seed beads without assistance.

Picture a garland of leaves, vines and flowers twining gently around your neck! In this class students will make a simple small bead necklace and embellish it with flower beads as well as vines and leaves constructed from seed beads. Although the techniques are simple and within the scope of beginning beaders, they may also be interesting to intermediate beaders who have not yet explored the sculptural possibilities of seed bead work. Prerequisite: Students should be able to construct a simple necklace using thread or have basic sewing skills.

These are beads made with a peyote frame with brick stitch inserts - inspired by Turkish Kilims. The beads can be used as a pendant, earrings, etc. A working knowledge of Peyote Stitch and Brick Stitch is essential.
Tekla's Cuff TEKLA'S CUFF

This cuff was inspired by the jewelry worn by royalty in the Byzantine Era and named for the Empress Tekla. Jewelry from this era is adorned with precious and semi-precious jewels and is large and elaborate. These pieces were made not only to show the importance of the royal person but also to draw attention away from the human body. Students will cover a metal armature with herringbone and peyote stitch and embellish it with fresh water pearls or semi precious stones. Participants will learn to combine these stitches, how to cover a form, bezel beads and stones. PREREQUISITE: Students must know Peyote and Herringbone Stitches. Some pre class preparation is required




  HAND KNOTTING
BY APPOINTMENT ONLY

Level: All. Students should be comfortable using a needle and thread.
Time: 1 ½ hours
Fee: $65 (Includes book and materials kit)

In a hands-on session you will learn the art of delicate knotting between beads as seen in fine jewelry. Learn from how to work with the correct tools and materials. You will work closely with the instructor to learn the correct techniques to achieve tight, well-placed knots. This is a techniques class - you will not finish your project in class.

Our classroom space is available every Tuesday for an “open studio” session. Bring a project, your own lunch or snacks and enjoy the company of other beaders. This is not a class but an opportunity to relax and have fun while you work on your bead projects away from the distractions of home and family. No need to sign up – no fee – come and go as your schedule permits

Can't seem to focus on your projects at home? You are welcome to work at our “Make It – Take It” table. Weekdays and Thursday evenings are the best times to stop in if you need help and inspiration from our staff. But if Saturday is the only day that suits your schedule, well, that's fine, too. Our help is free when you are using materials purchased at Studio Baboo.
