NEW CLASSES

Iside Pendant ISIDE PENDANT
Saturday, June 18th

Instructor: Special Guest Instructor:Maggie Meister
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Time: 10:00-4:00.
Fee: $75 plus materials

Iside (Isis in Italian) Pendant is inspired by the headdress found on many of the frescoes and statuary from antiquity. There was a temple dedicated to Isis in the city of Pompeii and a famous fresco that depicts worship of the goddess in that city.
Components are made with peyote stitch combined with right angle weave using cylinder beads and size 15 seed beads. Freshwater pearls are then bezeled with peyote and components are combined to form the pendant. Note: The pendant is displayed on a chain made with Viking Knit. This technique will not be covered in the workshop however; the instructions will include a seed bead chain for the pendant.
Prerequisite: Participants should be familiar with peyote stitch and right angle weave.

Macha Necklace MACHA NECKLACE
Sunday, June 19th

Instructor: Special Guest Instructor:Maggie Meister
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Time: 10:00-4:00.
Fee: $75 plus materials

This Macha necklace has had many incarnations. The original piece was inspired by the Celtic torcs worn in ancient Ireland. But as time went on, I fell in love with the spirals found in Celtic designs and Macha changed to use these spirals and more color. The piece is named for the woman who was the only High Queen among the High Kings of Ireland.
Participants will learn to make spiral pattern components with circular peyote and and join the components to make three-dimensional triskelians – a motif from the Celts.
Prerequisite: Participants should be familiar with circular peyote and right angle weave.

Purple Cone Flower PURPLE CONE FLOWER
Date TBA

Instructor: Special Guest Instructor:Donna Dickt
Level: Intermediate
Time: 10:00-3:00.
Fee: $60 plus materials

The Purple Coneflower or Echinacea is considered a virtually foolproof perennial for gardeners. Now it is a virtually foolproof flower for beaders too! Traditionally the coneflower sports pink petals beneath a large spiked cone. Many other varieties exist to tempt the creative spirit. This pattern will adapt well to flamboyant tropical oranges, cool green and white varieties such as the Coconut Lime, or bright yellow Black Eyed Susans. You may want to make them all! Prerequisite: Students must know pointed basic and lacing techniques.

Sweet Pea SWEET PEA
Date TBA

Instructor: Special Guest Instructor:Donna Dickt
Level: Intermediate
Time: 10:00-3:00.
Fee: $60 plus materials

Deemed the floral sensation of the late Victorian era, Sweet Peas are a fitting subject for techniques of French Beaded Flowers, another sensation of the Victorian era. These intricate but delicate flowers come in a variety of colors including red, pink, blue, white and lavender. Although they are climbers in their natural habitat, they make excellent cut flowers. Use them alone en masse, or as filler for other arrangements. Prerequisite: Students must know scalloped edges technique.

About the Instructor

Maggie Meister began beading after “coveting” a pair of earrings worn by her son’s kindergarten teacher. When she learned that the teacher had made them after taking a class, Maggie signed up for a bead class and never looked back. She spent the next four years in the Seattle area, studying with the wonderful teachers at Beads & Beyond in Bellevue, Washington and then began teaching and working at the shop. Two pieces of her work were selected for Absolutely Beads in 1997.
A move to Naples, Italy in 1998 changed her life forever and in ways she never could have imagined. The rich, lively culture of the Neapolitan people and the ancient mosaics, frescoes, and jewelry designs from Pompeii and the Vesuvius area are a major source of inspiration for her designs. In addition, she has studied at the Mosaic Art School in Ravenna, Italy under Luciana Notturni and learned the ancient traditional methods of creating mosaics. This has added to her ability to create beadwork translated from the designs of frescoes and mosaics seen on the floors and walls of abbeys, monasteries and ruins. Sculptural reflections from the images she loves are translated into jewelry using seed beads with a variety of stitches.
Maggie has taught and continues to teach workshops nationally and internationally in Turkey, Germany and Italy. Her work has been shown in Milan and Naples and has been featured in Beadwork Magazine, Bead & Button Magazine along with others. She has recently completed a book with Lark Publishing. Classical Elegance is part of the Masters Beadweaving Series and will be released in August 2011.
Maggie’s classes are suitable for intermediate to advanced students who are proficient in one or more seed bead stitches. You may view the class projects inthe store, on our website www.studiobaboo.com or on Maggie’s website www.mmmbeads.com.
